Gum Recession Treatment

By a board-certified periodontist in Allen, TX.

Welcome to REGEN Periodontics & Dental Implant Center, located in Allen, TX.

One of the common issues we address here is gum recession—a condition where the gum tissue that surrounds the teeth wears away or pulls back, exposing more of the tooth's root.

Gum recession is not just a cosmetic issue; it can lead to more serious problems if not addressed in a timely manner. Fortunately, with modern techniques, we can effectively treat this with gum grafts and prevent further oral health complications.

The gum grafting procedure involves using your own tissue or donor tissue to replace or supplement the receded gum line. Here at REGEN, we often use a minimally invasive tunneling approach, supplemented with biologic products like Emdogain to enhance post-procedure healing.

Our approach is focused on patient comfort and long-term success. When you’re ready, we’re here to meet you, discuss your needs, and plan the best path forward for your gum health.

How does it work?

Understanding the Gum Graft Procedure

The gum grafting procedure begins with a thorough consultation and examination to first determine if a gum graft is necessary. Dr. Ling and Dr. Tai will evaluate the affected area. The decision to proceed with gum grafting typically depends on several factors:

  • Does the area show signs of inflammation or disease?
  • Is the gum recession progressively getting worse?
  • Is the condition bothersome to you, whether aesthetically, due to sensitivity, or other concerns?

If the answer to any of the above questions is 'yes', you will likely benefit from a gum grafting procedure.

We will then determine the best type of graft and technique suited for your individual situation.

At REGEN, our goal is to make your journey toward healthier gums as smooth and comfortable as possible. Whenever feasible, we utilize a minimally invasive method known as the tunneling technique. This approach allows us to introduce the grafting material without the need for extensive incisions, often resulting in a more comfortable recovery phase.

The grafting material, which could be sourced from your own tissue or a donor's, is carefully positioned in the area where the gums have receded, and is gently secured with sutures. Throughout the procedure, you'll be under local anesthesia or sedation to ensure your comfort.

If appropriate, we might also use advanced healing aids like Emdogain to support the recovery process. Emdogain is a biologically active protein that boosts soft tissue healing, further enhancing the likelihood of a successful graft and minimizing post-operative discomfort.
